This illustration depicts the concept of mental health in my culture. Spirits possessing the mind used to be a common explanation for mental health or behavioral issues. It still kind of is but more in the colonial/Christian sense now. I remember when my sister was “talking back” or being “rebellious” as a young child, my Nigerian aunt would say that the “devil is possessing her”. Instead of her anger issues or behavioral issues being addressed for what they were (maybe a response to something in her environment) they were characterized as possession of some sort.
